Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Ihrem Wunsche zufolge anbei mein Wahlspruch und mein Name | Per aspera ad astra! […]". - Specializing in military paintings, Braun accompanied the Austrian army during the 1864 Danish War, as well as the German army in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and 1871, and created paintings of battle scenes as well as monumental panoramas, including the popular "Battle of Sedan", measuring 122 meters. - Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
