To Colonel Jean-Louis Aubert (1813-88) in Lausanne, discussing a planned reconnaissance mission along the southern border of Switzerland. The operation, he writes, has been approved by the military department: the area is to be divided into three parts, the frontier on Italian territory, in Ticino, and in Grisons. Wieland himself will take over the Italian reconnaissance party; he has the assistance of several other officers but will need another lieutenant. Aubert is to cover Ticino and is to have several officers his disposal: "J'ai encore à Vous faire ces communications nécessaires sur les reconnaissances de nos frontières du Sud.
