Albrecht von Wallenstein
Bohemian military leader and statesman, 1583-1634
Albrecht Wenzel Eusebius von Wallenstein, also von Waldstein, was a Bohemian military leader and statesman who fought on the Catholic side during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). His successful martial career made him one of the richest and most influential men in the Holy Roman Empire by the time of his death. Wallenstein became the supreme commander of the armies of the Habsburg Emperor Ferdinand II and was a major figure of the Thirty Years' War. When Wallenstein realised the war against Sweden could last decades, he arranged a series of armistices to negotiate peace in 1633. However, he was accused of treachery and assassinated on behalf of the Emperor.

To his confidant, the colonel (and later field marshal) Hans Georg von Arnim, dating from the time of their victorious advance on the Danes and the occupation of Mecklenburg, following Wallenstein's creation as Duke of Mecklenburg: "Dieweil der ob[erst] Hausman itzt zum herren reisen thuet als hab ich nochmahls den herren bitten wollen er wolle ein scharfe disciplin halten auf das die länder nicht ruinirt undt per consequens sie undt nacher die arme in desperacion gebracht. Von den steten als von Wismar vor die ubrige 4000 man von Rostock vor die 1000 pferdt von Strallsundt undt Stetin halte der herr die contribucion zusammen auf das wir sie zu dem gen. nothdürften gebrauchen köndten. Der herr lasse die stück aufs eheste zu Lubek oder was ihm gefallen wirdt giessen auf das wir sie auf den frieling gebrauchen können.
