Henry van de Velde
Belgian architect, 1863-1957
Henry Clemens Van de Velde was a Belgian painter, architect, interior designer, and art theorist. Together with Victor Horta and Paul Hankar, he is considered one of the founders of Art Nouveau in Belgium. He worked in Paris with Samuel Bing, the founder of the first gallery of Art Nouveau in Paris. Van de Velde spent the most important part of his career in Germany and became a major figure in the German Jugendstil. Van de Velde was strongly influenced by John Ruskin and William Morris’s English Arts and Crafts movement and he was one of the first architects or furniture designers to apply curved lines in an abstract style, rather than based on nature.

Van der Velde notes that he realised that the album contains pictures of people of different nationalities. He is wondering himself bitterly if such times will return again when people of different nationalities were friends: „En feuilletant cet album où se trouvent réunis tant de noms d’hommes de nationalités différentes avec quelle amertume ne doit-on pas penser qu’il y eût un temps où on aurait pu les réunir tous dans un salon et qu’ils se seraient tendu alors avec une cordialité et une sympathie sincères les mains ! Sommes-nous aujourd’hui assez éloignés de ce temps ? Et par quelles crises dura encore passer l’Humanité avant que se rétablissent entre les hommes de différentes nationalités ces rapports de société et de cordialité qui sont la garantie la plus féconde d’une culture progressive ?“.
