"Enclosed I send [a] letter to Mr. Defregger [d. i. Franz Ritter von Defregger, 1835-1921] which please deliver. I hope my picture is progressing fast & that I shall not be disappointed in having it in New York by Sept 1st. All my commissions have been promptly filled the part season and my new Gallery will be opened to my friends in the early autumn. My friend Mr Avery will visit Munich in a short time & call upon you to visit Mr Defregger - I think it [is] important to Mr D - that the painting should have its place in the collection when the Gallery opens […]".
- Der älteste Sohn des Eisenbahn-Tycoons Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) arbeitete im Alter von 18 Jahren zunächst in einem New Yorker Bankhaus. Nach dem Eintritt in den Vorstand der Staten Island Railroad wurde er 1862 zu deren Präsidenten und drei Jahre später zum Vizepräsidenten der Hudson River Railroad. 1869 wurde er Vizepräsident der New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company, 1877 ihr Präsident. In diesem Jahr, als Cornelius Vanderbilt starb, übernahm William Henry Vanderbilt als Präsident die New York Central Railroad, die Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, die Canada Southern Railway und die Michigan Central Railroad..
