Born in 1877 in Ukraine but often referred to as Swiss, Thalberg emerged as a celebrated concert pianist in Paris around 1902 and performed with many of the leading orchestras in Europe. Thalberg had studios in Paris and London where he held recitals and private lessons. In London, he gave three acclaimed performances in honor of the Liszt centennial. Thalberg relocated to America in 1913 to start a celebrated tenure at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music teaching advanced repertoire. During his time there, Thalberg became famous as a teacher with a knack for discovering and honing young musicians’ talent. His pupils were regularly featured in music publications such as Music News and Musical America in the 1910s and 1920s. When his academic schedule allowed, Thalberg played concerts and recitals throughout America, often at colleges and universities. Thalberg remained at the Cincinnati Conservatory and continued performing until at least 1931. There is little record of his activities after 1930..
