Samuel Thomas von Soemmerring (1755–1830), anatomist and physiologist; discovered the macula in the human eye and designed an electrical telegraph. ALS. Frankfurt/M., 27 Jan. 1805. 4°. 2 pp. With seal and address. To Heinrich Wilhelm Karl von Harnier (1767–1823), they Royal Prussian Resident in Munich, regarding his pending appointment to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. He informs Harnier that he has just received a most genial letter from St. Petersburg which requires an immediate answer, for which reason he must know how matters stand in Munich. In case he has spoiled his chances there, he will be happy to move North rather than South. He adds that Harnier’s letter was of such remarkable fidelity that he would be doubly pained to be so far removed from him – though perhaps they will meet again in St. Petersburg. – In March, Soemmerring was to accept his appointment to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich.
