"Alfred Garrievich Schnittke was a Soviet and German composer. Schnittke's early music shows the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich. He developed a polystylistic technique in works such as the epic ""Symphony No. 1"" (1969–1972) and his first concerto grosso (1977). In the 1980s, Schnittke's music began to become more widely known abroad with the publication of his second (1980) and third (1983) string quartets and the String Trio (1985); the ballet ""Peer Gynt"" (1985–1987); the third (1981), fourth (1984), and fifth (1988) symphonies; and the viola concerto (1985) and first cello concerto (1985–1986). As his health deteriorated, Schnittke's music started to abandon much of the extroversion of his polystylism and retreated into a more withdrawn, bleak style."

Eigenhändiges musikalisches Albumblatt mit Notenzitat und Bezeichnung „Konzert für Bratsche und Orchester, I. Satz (1985)“. und Unterschrift. Geboren in Engels, der damaligen Hauptstadt der autonomen Wolgadeutschen Sowjetrepublik gilt Schnittke als musikalischer „Gratwanderer zwischen Ost und West“. Schnittkes Werk ist auch mit John Neumeier, Choreograf und Direktor des Balletts an der Hamburgischen Staatsoper, verbunden. Neumeier hatte 1983 Tennessee Williams' "Endstation Sehnsucht" nach der Musik von Schnittkes erster Sinfonie inszeniert.
1989 führte Neumeier Schnittkes Ballett "Peer Gynt" in der Hamburger Oper auf. 1985 erlitt er einen Schlaganfall, infolgedessen er kurzzeitig klinisch tot war. Daraufhin entstand etwa die Hälfte seiner wichtigsten Werke, bis er 13 Jahre später starb..

Autograph manuscript graphic score signed (on the title, 'A. Schnittke') for 'Cantus perpetuus' for keyboard, solo percussion and four percussionists. A striking graphic score for this work which presents infinite improvisational possibilities. Provenance: (1) Sotheby's, 20 November 2014, lot 185. (2) Schøyen Collection, MS 5528. The theme for the 'Cantus perpetuus' is notated on a single stave at the upper right-hand, while the body of the score comprises a geometric arrangement of twelve 35-note segments on two-stave systems, arranged in an oval pattern within an outline of five coloured lines connected to each of the 12 theme variants, central rhombic figure with internal crossing lines also in five colours; a key in Russian at upper left noting that the red, green, blue and yellow lines represent 'polyphony', 'melody', 'rhythm' and 'harmony'.
This graphic score is the only written form for the work, and is intentionally open to differing interpretations by the performers. It was first performed in Moscow on 14 December 1975, a performance which Schnittke himself regarded as definitive. An orchestral version followed in 1981..

An Klaus Burmeister: "Schon im April kam Ihr Brief vom 25. 3. 1986. Doch zögerte ich mit der Antwort und kann Ihnen leider auch jetzt nichts genaues sagen. Der Grund ist der, daß Sie von einer Autograp[h]edition der Partitur schreiben - und eben die ist jetzt unmöglich. Als die Uraufführung geplant wurde, machte ich im 2. Satz sehr viel Änderungen und ließ das alles auf zusätzlichen Blättern von meinem damaligen Sekretär ausführen - und der, noch ein erfahrungsloser Mann, machte es fehlerhaft, so daß ich es gar nicht in die Partitur, sondern in eine Kopie eintragen ließ, in der Hoffnung, es später selbst in Reinschrift zu machen.
Nun hatte ich im Juli 1985 einen schweren Schlaganfall, der mir dreimal fast das Leben kostete, und danach habe ich zwar Möglichkeit begrenzt zu arbeiten, aber keine Hoffnung die frühere Handschrift zurückzubekommen [...]". - Im linken Rand gelocht (keine Textberührung) und etwas knittrig; beiliegend ein ms.
