Sergej Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), Russian composer and pianist. SP 8 x 10 inch, “S. Rachmaninoff”, n. p., 4th April 1930. Russian. One corner crease. A black and white portrait of Rachmaninoff dressed in an overcoat and gloves, standing in a doorway, possibly aboard a ship. Inscribed to E. K. Somova, a family member of the avant-garde artist Konstantin Somov. As I am getting older, my vocabulary is becoming as bad as my character, that makes me more jealous of yours.” – In 1923 he hired Yevgeni Somov, nephew of the famous painter Konstantin Somov, as his personal secretary. Rachmaninoff enjoyed a long and close relationship with Somov and in the summer of 1925 his uncle Konstantin painted Rachmaninoff’s portrait. Signed vertically in the upper right corner of the photograph.
