Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Inspired by his travels to North Africa and the Middle East, Rabes was the most prominent figure of Berlin Orientalism. He depicted Arabian landscapes, markets, landmarks and people in an impressionist style and was invited to accompany German Emperor Wilhelm II on a trip to Istanbul and the Holy Land in 1898. - Some small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
