Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "I understand it is my autograph you ask for and I have pleasure in adding it [...]". - Starting out as a genre painter, Ouless quickly turned towards portraiture and established for himself a successful career in this field, his works including portraits of Charles Darwin and Thomas Hardy, before shifting his focus towards landscape painting in his later career. - Traces of a postmark; some small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
