Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - A member of the Berlin Secession, Oppler specialized in portraiture and etching. He developed a great fascination with Russian ballet, which inspired many of his works since 1909 and established his reputation as the most important German artist chronicler of stage dance in the 20th century. - Small ink spots; traces of a small fold near upper left corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
