Alfred Nobel
Swedish chemist and innovator, 1833-1896
Alfred Nobel was the inventor of dynamite, and held 355 different patents, dynamite being the most famous. His fortune was used posthumously to institute the Nobel Prize which was first awarded in 1901 in five categories, Chemistry, Literature, Peace, Physics, and Physiology or Medicine. The Nobel Prize is widely regarded as the most prestigious award available. The synthetic element nobelium was named after him. His name also survives in modern-day companies such as Dynamit Nobel and AkzoNobel, which are descendants of mergers with companies Nobel himself established.

Autograph Letter Signed, "Alfred," to his brother Robert, in Swedish, explaining that he was not able to go to Stockholm or Getå, suggesting that he ought to have just left from Sanremo [Italy] despite his illness, expressing frustration at having lost the lawsuit in London [brought by his Explosives Company against Frederick Abel and James Dewar for infringement of the company's patent on the explosive "cordite"], explaining that the purchase of Bofors was necessary to continue the development of his industry, promising to return to Sweden in the spring and, in a postscript, inquiring about the date of a wedding and apologizing for not having written on a larger sheet. „[…] We lost the vile lawsuit in London, as you know: the company will not be giving up the ghost as a consequence, but it will have lost a large part of its spirit, and since it lives on blast (explosive blast), the matter is serious enough […] „[…] As you know, a long time ago I almost bought Bofors.
I have long wanted to have a cannon workshop because it is absolutely necessary for the development of things in my industry. But the purchase of Bofors's shares with the associated agreements has forced me to go on a winter trip for several nights […]“.

IX. 1893. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8°. – An seinen Bruder Robert (1829–1896), u. a. über Ludwig XIII., der ein Versager gewesen sei und nur Glück mit Richelieu hatte, über Probleme betreffs der Heiratsabsichten von Roberts Töchtern, für die er, wiewohl unverheiratet und kinderlos, ihm gern Ratschläge geben könnte und über die mit seinen Brüdern 1878 gegründete „Naphtha-Gesellschaft Gebrüder Nobel“ zur Ausbeutung der Erdölfelder bei Baku, um die sich zur Zeit sein Neffe Emanuel kümmere, sowie über den amerikanischen Konkurrenten der Gesellschaft, die Standard Oil Company John D. An seinen Bruder Robert Nobel (1829-1896), den ältesten der vier Geschwister, der zusammen mit dem Zweitältesten, Ludvig Nobel (1831-1888) zunächst in der väterlichen Firma arbeitete, dann nach der Pleite des Vaters die Ölquellen um St. Petersburg nutzbar machte sowie 1876 seine eigene Ölfirma unter dem Namen „Branobel“ ins Leben rief, als deren Agent er einige Zeit in Baku am Kaspischen Meer verbrachte. Zwischen dem berühmten Chemiker, Erfinder des Dynamits und Gründer des Nobelpreises, Alfred Nobel, und seinem Bruder Robert gab es zeitweise einen regen Briefwechsel.
