Interesting letter to the important publisher and bookseller Urbain Canel, concerning Monnier's protracted illness and the loss of his manuscript by the printer: "Je ne suis pas allé vous voir depuis longtemps comme je me le proposais. J'ai toujours été malade et je le suis encore. Je ne sors absolument que pour aller à mon restaurant. J'ai passé le Carnaval le plus triste. Je me suis présenté chez Barbier la semaine d.re et on n'a pu me dire dans son - cloaque [!] s'il y était. J'en suis donc avenu comme j'y étais allé.
Il paraitrait d'après ce que j'ai ouï dire que le f[ini] manuscrit du roman aurait été égaré. J'en suis bien fâché mais comment faire, à qui a-t-il été confié à qui l'a t'on rendu. Je ne l'ai plus vu. Veuillez me faire passer tout ce qu'on imprimera au fur et à mesure je vous remettrai le complément [...]". - The only book by Henri Monnier that was published by Canel and printed by A. Barbier, a business partner of Monnier's friend Honoré de Balzac, is his famous "Scènes populaires" from 1830. The letter can thus be dated with a high degree of certainty to 1829/30. - With minor tears..
