Letter concerning a „Portuguese translation of Musotte,“ a three-act play adapted from Maupassant's 1882 novel L'Enfant. In fine condition. Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant is considered the greatest French author of short stories next to Stendhal (1783-1842), Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850), Gustave Flaubert (1821- 1880) and Émile Zola (1840-1902). In L’Enfant a hardened bachelor falls in love with a young girl (or more precisely with her foot). On the wedding day he learns that his ex mistress is going to die and that she wants him to raise their mutual child.

Arriving back home to his bride he confesses everything and she says: „Well, we will raise this little one.“ Gustave Flaubert, a friend of Maupassant’s mother, was crucial for his career. Flaubert supported his first literary attempts. With the publication of his novel "Boule de Suif" in 1880, Maupassant achieved fame and fortune that enabled him to travel extensively. He wrote about 260 novellas as well as several novels ("Bel Ami", 1885). Living with mental problems since 1891, Maupassant died in Passy near Paris in 1893..
