To „Carola v. Gästern“, who contacted her about a possible inheritance with the words „In a word, I have a considerable fortune and no heir“. Lessing answered: „[…] there are two points I must make. One is that it is more than possible I shall be going to live in the United States. I have been living here a long time now, since 1949, and I feel it is time I moved on, to new experiences. You say you are fond of this country, and you may not be happy about my leaving it. The other thing is that I am not short of money.

I was indeed poor when I began writing, and this stte of affairs went on for some years. But for some time now I have had more than enough. Of course this situation may not last! Writers’ lives are always precarious. But I give away a proportion of what I earn, and if my situation does not worsen, I shall continue to do so. You may decide that you prefer to give away your own money, rather than letting me do it! Her family then moved to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where she remained until moving in 1949 to London, England. Lessing was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature. In awarding the prize, the Swedish Academy described her as "that epicist of the female experience, who with scepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilisation to scrutiny“. Lessing actually did not move to the USA. During the late-1990s, Lessing suffered a stroke[which stopped her from travelling during her later year. The letter by Carola v. Gästern (translates as Carola von Yesterday) was a prank by German author Winfried Bornemann (born 1944), who is well known for these kind of letters..
