Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Mannigfach sind die Wege der Kunst, doch welcher der rechte, | Lerne von der Natur, sie ist erhaben und schön! [...]". - Inspired by study trips to the Nordic and Baltic seas, the German Harz, France, Italy, Great Britain and Spain as well as Egypt and the Middle East, Koerner created popular landscape paintings as well as altar pieces, was appointed professor in 1894, and served as Chairman of the Verein Berliner Künstler from 1895 to 1899.
