To Robert Hume Middlemass, Esq., of Westbarns, joyfully receiving praise of Middlemass's son, and sending a further publication: "I am very glad to hear that your son has been amused by my 'Peter the Whaler' & 'Albatross' which my brother had the pleasure of lending him, indeed I can assure you R. Hume Middlemass Esq. that I feel more flattered by the interest taken in a work by a young unprecedent reader than by the praise bestowed through the press. As he may be amused by my first production the 'Circassion Chief' [1844] I have the pleasure of sending it for his perusal [...]".
