Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Durchhalten! Ein Pereat den schlaffen Seelen! [...]". - After winning a scholarship to Rome in 1883 for his work "Bacchant mit Panthern", Janensch founded his own studio in 1886 and started teaching at the Berlin Academy in 1887. Many of his works show themes of industrial work, including smithery and glassblowing. - Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
