Quand j'étais jeune, je faisais souvent des lectures de poèmes, et à chaque fois mon choix était différent. Cela fait longtemps que ça ne m'est pas arrivé, mais aujourd'hui, sans savoir pourquoi, j'ai envie de choisir cette dernière strophe d'un poème très ancien, et plutôt mystérieux: Le lendemain matin l'air avait goût de sel; | Alors je ressentis une double présence.
| Sur le sol gris serpente un trait profond et dense, | Comme l'arc aboli d'un ancien rituel. | Bien à vous [...]" - The quoted poem is by Houellebecq himself, titled "Vocation religieuse" and is included in the collection "La poursuite du bonheur" (The Pursuit of Happiness, Poems; 1991). - Very rare. Translated: "[...] It would surprise me if at your age (if I am fortunate enough to reach it), my handwriting is as legible as yours. When I was young, I often gave poetry readings, and each time my choice was different. It has been a long time since this happened to me, but today, without knowing why, I feel like choosing the last stanza of a very old and rather mysterious poem: The next morning the air tasted of salt; | Then I felt a double presence. | On the gray ground snakes a deep and dense line, | Like the abolished arc of an ancient ritual. | Yours sincerely [...]".
