To the French jurist and "conseiller d'État" Alfred Blanche (1816-93), confirming a meeting: "J'ai l'honneur de vous accuser reception de votre note de hier. Nous vous entendrons dans le café de Peters a côté de la porte du Vaudeville [...]". - In 1869 Wilhelm Heine was the newly appointed military attaché at the American Legation in Paris. In 1861, after the beginning of the American Civil War, the Forty-Eighter had returned to the US to serve in the Union Army. In 1871 Heine retired from his post in Paris and returned to his native town Dresden.
