Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - A gifted caricaturist, Heine was a leading illustrator of the Munich-based humoristic and satirical magazines "Fliegende Blätter" and "Simplicissimus". His illustrated critiques of society and the monarchy in particular led to a six-month prison sentence in 1898; his caricatures of Nazi leaders forced him to flee Germany and emigrate to Prague, Oslo and finally Stockholm, where he published his cynical autobiography "Ich warte auf Wunder" in 1942. - A few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
