To Monty, thanking her for the kind birthday wishes and saying that she has delayed writing until she could pick some lilac, ‘and I was very afraid that after that sudden hot weather and being away in Denmark, I would miss the best flowers’, and continuing that fortunately there is some still owing to the late spring and so she sends some Windsor lilac with thanks and best wishes, ‘and with many remembrances of the old days’. - Known affectionately as Monty to the Royal family, the French governess Madame Montaudon-Smith had originally been hired as a French teacher for Elizabeth and Margaret when they were living at Windsor Castle during the War.
