A letter of recommendation in Italian for a baritone, accompanied by an autograph sketch of an unknown aria. Donizetti recommends M. Burdin, "ottimo Baritone, inglese, francese ed itali[ano]", to his fellow composer, Julius Benedict, in London. - Together with the letter is part of a sketch for an unknown aria, "Fortunato il cor che sente / il poter della pietà / sempre il fato avrà ridente / sempre calma il core avrà", written on a bass clef in D major in the baritone range. The text repeats as the melody becomes more elaborate and ornamented, offering a virtuoso display of vocal talent that typified the Bel Canto style of which Donizetti was a leading exponent.
The sheet is trimmed, but the aria continues on the reverse. At the time a letter of recommendation from Rossini would have counted for a great deal, as the composer was at the height of his fame and enjoying an international career across the great opera houses of Europe, including Paris, Milan and Vienna. - Two memorials of the golden age of Italian opera that complement one another excellently..
