The studio album recorded in New York in 1962/63 was the fourth and final collaboration between Miles Davis and Gil Evans; it was published by Columbia Records in 1964 (cat. no. CL 2106 and CS 8906). After nearly four months of recording sessions (from 27 July to 6 November 1962) had yielded no more than 20 minutes' worth of publishable music, enough for one side but not an entire album, the producer Teo Macero decided to include a 1963 recording by the Miles Davis Quintet ("Summer Night") so that he might release the LP padded out to roughly 30 minutes - a move that strongly upset Davis, who objected to releasing a project that he considered unfinished.
The rift would last for almost two years, when the two rejoined for work on "Miles Smiles" - an album running to a little over 40 minutes and recorded in October 1966 in no more than two days. - Davis' signature is on the reverse; on the front are the signatures of Gil Evans, George Coleman, Steve Lacy, Elvin Jones, Bobby Rosengarden, Jimmy Knepper, Jerome Richardson, and Ron Carter. On the inner sleeve the collector has noted when and where he acquired the various signatures. The cover is in remarkably good condition, especially considering that the collector evidently took it along to eight (or nine) concerts (Miles Davis' signature is undated)..
