René Clair
French filmmaker and writer, 1898-1981
"Clair first established his reputation in the 1920s as a director of silent films in which comedy was often mingled with fantasy. He went on to make some of the most innovative early sound films in France, before going abroad to work in the UK and USA for more than a decade. Returning to France after World War II, he continued to make films that were characterised by their elegance and wit, often presenting a nostalgic view of French life in earlier years. He was elected to the Académie française in 1960. Clair's best known films include ""The Italian Straw Hat"", ""Under the Roofs of Paris"", ""Le Million"", ""À nous la liberté"", ""I Married a Witch"", and ""And Then There Were None""."

To the unnamed Belgian author, filmmaker and documentarist Henri Storck. Back from a trip to Belgium, he thanks Storck for the friendly reception at the Club du Cinéma, attaching some photographs and inviting Storck to let him know if he can be of any assistance to the Club. In the first postscript he begs Storck to give his apologies to Léon Spilliaert, whom he was not able to visit, while in the second one he asks for his help in obtaining a drawing from James Ensor: "Cher Monsieur, De retour à Paris, je tiens à vous dire encore une fois ma gratitude pour l'accueil qui m'a été fait par le Club du Cinéma.
Veuillez, je vous prie, remercier en mon nom, tous vos amis. Il m'est agréable de vous dire, personnellement, combien j'ai été sensible à vos attentions et au plaisir de vous connaître. C'est un grand réconfort pour moi de savoir que, loin de Paris, mon effort est suivi avec sympathie par des esprits que j'estime. Vous trouverez ci joint les quelques photographies demandées. Ne manquez pas d'avoir reconnu à moi, si je puis être en quoique ce soit utile au Club. Et croyez, je vous prie, à mes sentiments les plus sympathiques, René Clair. P.S. 1.) Présentez encore une fois mes excuses à M. Spilliaert. J'ai beaucoup déploré que la fatigue de ma femme m'empêche d'aller chez lui. 2.) Si par hasard, M.
