As President of the Board of Trade to Mr. Coates. „I was unable to answer your letter of Dec.15th sooner, as the appointment to the Comptrollership of Patents, on which the possibility of my offering a post in the Patent Office to Mr Buchnill defended, had not been decided upon. To Mr. Strong. He asks him to enlighten him on the year 1816: „Can you guide me in regard to the year 1816. The Great War was over, Castlereagh wanted to maintain the war tax, and he spoke of the ignorant impatience of taxation, but the left strongly opposed this policy and instead obtained significant reductions. He would like to have more information on this matter and asks Strong to assist him with his encyclopedias and his knowledge. […]“

To S. Whittaker, discussing the appointment of magistrates in Oldham and asking: „I have received and thank you for your letter, but it does not tell me all I want to know. Before I ask Lord James to appoint more magistrates I must be properly supplied with information. How many magistrates are there in Oldham? Why more magistrates should be appointed? as for instance the straggling nature of the Borough - and any other circumstance that would justify the increase. When I have this I will communicate with Lord James. Also I must have a list of magistrates recommended, among whom, there should be a least one Radical. […]“

To his cousin Ivor Churchill [Guest, later 1st Victome of Wimborne]. Churchill is rather put out to see that Guest does not in fact propose to ask any of the questions, but this is banished in his delight at seeing that his bête noire St John Brodrick, the secretary for war, has 'been compelled to withdraw his proposals about the Yeomanry. It is satisfactory to have drawn first blood'. The letter concludes with an intriguing invitation to Guest to join him in Paris, where he will stop on the way home, and where he is keen to pursue a curious-sounding assignation: 'I cannot remember the address of Sunny's friend, & I shall feel inclined to pay her a visit, so will you write without fail a discreet letter ...
with the necessary information' ['Sunny' is their cousin the 9th Duke of Marlborough, the nickname drawn from his secondary title as Earl of Sunderland]..

To his cousin Ivor Churchill [Guest, later 1st Victome of Wimborne]. Churchill writes in November with a list of questions [not present] he wishes to have answered, instructing his cousin to 'Unload them gently upon the W[ar] Office', asking the questions on a single subject on different days in order to detect 'discrepancy & lying'.

To Mr. Brady: „[…] I have just read the review in the Boston Buyers with emotion. I thank you for it most heartily. I feel that I cannot say more. But I hope that I shall have the pleasure of meeting you very soon. The enclosed has given me a piece of news to make me happier than that concerning the Naval Academy Dinner about you, who share my love for the old school and admiration for its officers can appreciate this.
