In French, to the botanist Ferdinand Julius Cohn (1828-98), whom he thanks for sending him his work on insectivorous plants. He encloses a brochure by his son, the botanist Casimir Pyramus de Candolle, on the same subject, and notes that both Cohn and Casimir appear to agree on not considering the absorption of the insects a proof of real digestion by the plants: "Je vous suis fort obligé de l'envoi de votre opuscule sur les plantes insectivores. Vous trouverez ci-joint une brochure de mon fils, Casimir, sur le méme sujet, où il me semble que vous êtes d'accord à ne pas considérer l'absorption comme une preuve de véritable digestion [...]".
