To the Nova Scotian admiral George Augustus Westphal (1785-1875) as "Chairman of the Committee for the Benefit of the Shipwrecked". - "The Shipwrecked Mariners' Society" originated in 1839 with Admiral Sir George Cockburn appointed the Society’s first President. Westphal served as flag captain for Sir Cockburn in 1832 but was invalided out of active service in 1834, and subsequently took over a chairman's position on a similar committee. - With traces of old mounting on the verso and some brownstaining.
