Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Supported by the ducal court in Schwerin throughout his career, Berwald specialized in bronze or marble portrait busts and statues, his motifs including German royalty as well as religious themes; his masterpiece shows the Crucifixion. - Traces of a postmark; a few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
