For this reason he begs the recipient to hold and give back his membership application. Berthelot assures the recipient that this will not affect Berthelot's work as scientific director. Further Berthelot promises to come to the reunion on Saturday: "Il m'est venu des scrupules au sujet de la tranformation de ma créance sous la Société Lamirault et Cie en actions de la nouvelle Société.
En consequence, je vous prie de vouloir bien tenir pour mon avenue l'adhésion que je vous avais adressée à cet Egard en de me la retouner ou remettre demain. Il est bien entendu que ceci ne modifie en rien mon concours à la poursuite de l'oeuvre comme directeur sientifique: je viendrai à la reunion de Samdi [...]". - In 1889 Berthelot succeeded Louis Pasteur as secretary of the Academy of Sciences. In 1899, after the death of his friend Joseph Bertrand, Berthlot presented himself to the Académie Française and was elected to the his friend's seat, number 40.
