To the writer and publisher Jacques Boutelleau, better known as Jacques Chardonne, at Librairie Stock, concerning a preface for Paul Leyssac's French translation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. Although Bataille acknowledges that he had promised the preface to Leyssac, this was many years ago and he has currently no time to do it on such short notice, asking either to accept his apologies or to extend the deadline: "Oui, j'ai en effet promis une préface à M. P. LEYSSAC pour sa très belle traduction des Contes d'Andersen, mais cette préface a été promise il y a de nombreuses années et voici que brusquement vous me demandez de vous faire parvenir un texte dans le délai ls [!] plus rapproché.
Je ne pourrai certainement pas et à mon grand regret vous satisfaire, car je suis horriblement occupé en ce moment et il me faudrait bien quelques jours de lecture et de travail pour exécuter cette préface. Voulez-vous par conséquent ou accepter mes regrets ou me donner un délai satisfaisant". - Despite a recipient's note in pencil that appears to indicate an extension of the deadline, the preface for the 1922 publication "Contes d'Andersen" was ultimately contributed by the novelist and critic Edmond Jaloux. - With a large tear affecting the date and the recipient's note..
