Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Hiermit erfülle ich Ihren Wunsch […]". - A pioneer of modern art in Switzerland, Amiet was a member of Gauguin's Pont-Aven school, as well as of the expressionist artists' society "Brücke" in Dresden. His work comprises more than 4,000 paintings, of which more than 1,000 are self-portraits. - Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
