Pierre Alechinsky
Belgian artist, born 1927
Alechinsky has lived and worked in France since 1951. His work is related to tachisme, abstract expressionism, and lyrical abstraction. In 1949 he joined Christian Dotremont, Karel Appel, Constant, Jan Nieuwenhuys and Asger Jorn to form the art group Cobra. He participated both with the Cobra exhibitions and went to Paris to study engraving at Atelier 17 under the guidance of Stanley William Hayter in 1951. In 1954 he had his first exhibition in Paris and started to become interested in Chinese and Japanese calligraphy. His international career continued throughout the seventies and by 1983 he became Professor of painting at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris.

To the Belgian author, filmmaker and documentarist Henri Storck, who apparently had asked him some advice about the XXe arrondissement in Paris; Alechinsky outlines the real estate situation in his district: "Cher Henri, ce serait merveilleux de vous revoir en voisin ; voilà la situation : A ne pas acheter avant d'être fixé sur les intentions du ministre de la Reconstruction, il y a dans l'air des projets d'aménagement du XXe, et notre rue pourrait bien être un jour livrée aux architectes.
Donc, à ne pas acheter pour le moment. A ne pas conseiller à un ami. Les Qu* [illegible] en veulent 4.000.000, mais ils n'ont pas trouvé d'acheteur… Un voisin vient de vendre 3.300.000 le même genre d'appartement. Bon. Il serait préférable, et je pense que les Qu* seraient intéressés, de louer au mois. Je sais que s'année dernière ils louaient 40.000 frcs/mois meublé, avec chauffage central en état. Aujourd'hui, je ne sais pas si les meubles restent, et le chauffage central (la chaudière) est claquée. Voilà la situation.
