Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Umseitig das Gewünschte [...] Im nördlichen Schleswig, wo ich gebürtig bin, sind auf Fanø entstanden meine Bilder, Kirchen u. öffentliche Gebäude Schleswig-Holsteins enthalten monumentale Wandmalereien von mir. Mein Domizil ist Dresden. Ich liebe Italien, trotz der Verhetzung des Volkes [...]". - A founding member of the artists' association "Die Elbier" in 1902 and a prolific church painter and conservator in Northern Schleswig, Wilckens spent the summer months on the island of Fanø, the center of his creativity, where he bought a house in 1906 and painted landscapes and genre scenes.
