Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Besten Gruss! [...]". - Specializing in depicting Bavarian peasant and village life, Stieler created popular genre scenes which were frequently published in magazines like "Die Gartenlaube" and "Universum". His 1881 paintings of the BASF chemical factory in Ludwigshafen constitute a rather unusual part of his work. - Small ink spot near upper margin. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
