Two letters to his literary agent Elizabeth Otis ("Dear Elizabeth" or lacking salutation). The first, describing his plan to attend Spain's Holy Week and the Seville Fair with his wife Elaine (who would be taking photographs) with the aim of writing several pieces about the celebrations, noting the possibility that Elia Kazan would be joining them on a further trip to Greece, and remarking that the Queen of Greece has offered resources to Steinbeck and Kazan if they agree to make a film about Greece.

The second, a formal letter authorizing McIntosh & Otis to make disbursements from his funds to his wife's mother or his two sons during his trip to Europe. [New York], 10 February 1954 "Following is a projected plan for your files and so that you can have something definite to sell. As you know I am going to Spain in March to attend the Holy Week ceremonies and the Feria in Seville. These two celebrations are unique in the world as far as I know--a complete return to the middle ages. Before I saw this a couple of years ago I tried to read up on it and found singularly little in English had been done. . . . Therefore I will try to do several pieces on the subject and Elaine will photograph the whole thing. . . . ". . . There is a strong chance that Elia Kazan will join us in Spain. If that is so we will probably fly to Greece to set up the Greek morning[?] Picture we have been discussing. To fill you in--the Queen of Greece told us that if Kazan and I would work together on a film about Greece, the Greek government would give us every facility, even financing. "I have a story and it would be a good thing business wise to visit the Queen . . . ." Although Elia Kaza had worked with Steinbeck for two of his films, Viva Zapata (1951) and East of Eden (1955), the two never collaborated on a film about Greece, despite the Queen of Greece having offered financing and locations for such a film in 1954 and again in 1962, when Steinbeck visited Athens and the Aegean islands..

John Steinbeck (1902–1968), Schriftsteller. 2 e. Briefe mit U. („John Steinbeck“ bzw. „J. S.“). [New York], 1956. Zusammen (2+1=) 3 SS. auf 2 Bll. Gr.-4°. Jeweils mit e. adr. Kuvert. – Schöne Briefe an Christine Schunck von Sonntag über seine Söhne Thomas („Thom“) Myles und John Steinbeck IV („Catbird“) – „electric little people and very different one from the other and still very like“ – sowie über seine deutschen Wurzeln: „[...] I am sorry that I do not know German. My grandfather was a german and I guess the family came from Westphalia from the place of my name which is such old german as to be almost old English and near old Norsk. When first heard of they were called zu Steinbeck but then they moved and grew fat with something so that they were called von Grossteinbeck. I don’t think they ever went homt to become von und zu. But in America that was too much name. We hadn’t time for it and so my grandfather took back his ancient name – the name of a little stony stream in Westphalia [...]“ (a. d. Br. v. 13. Oktober). Der Br. v. 19. November mit Dank „for the bees’ wax candle“. – Unbedeutende Gebrauchsspuren.

Long letter to his friend Robert Wallston in New York about his vacation in Italy and a quarrel with his attorney regarding "The Log from the Sea of Cortez", with the suggestion to record tapes for future generations, and showing his pride at being created an "honorary stranger of Positano": - "Here we are Positaning - arrived yesterday by boat from Capri: The weather is changed to better and the whole family is famished for Lotuses or is it Loti. Seems to be a good lotus crop here complete with Bongo drums [...] Robert, I thought I had told you [...] never to show unfinished mss to an amateur. Every one is a writer and all will help. The less they know the more they will help. I finally made my 'Law' when my attorney, reading the opening lines of the Sea of Cortez, said 'Now I wouldn't have done it like that. What you ought to do is' - and then I blew with gilded words saying, 'You stupid son of a bitch, you wouldn't have done it at all [...] Your little Queen of the May thinks she is a book. All she is is 'subject matter' [...] And no one can edit him or herself. If she wanted fiction she should have employed Dick Nixon's ghost writer [...] But you have unique weapons. My advice to you is to rent a big safe deposit box under an assumed name and deposit there all your tape recordings [...] Future generations will have access not only to your glorious voice but to your inmost thoughts. But the best part is that they make you sound 'So Human' [...] Couldn't we use the word Confessions in the title? That would alone about sell 20,000 copies. I know you haven't! But we could make them up. Everybody does [...] Now it is the day of the Easter and a good thing too. La Vita got pretty dolce. The gay Roman play boys came down with their fashion models, and don't you believe that crap about how they go on every day [...] Next Thursday we are taking an Eytie ship [...] for Athens [...] I don't want to make you jealous but I have been made an honorary Stranger of Positano. That's true. And I can wear the decoration as a supository. Forestiero Onorario. I bet I'm the only one you know [...]". - A few small marginal tears.
