Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - A modernist painter active in Düsseldorf, Berlin, Paris, and Barbizon, Sohn-Rethel co-founded the artists' association "Sonderbund" in 1909, and worked as a war painter in Poland and Belarus in 1916, his wide-ranging oeuvre including still lifes, portraits, genre paintings and landscapes. - Traces of an angular fold near lower right corner; small creases near upper corners; traces of postmarks. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
