Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Specializing in military themes, Röchling created popular battle scenes of armed conflicts including the Seven Years' War, the Franco-Prussian War, and the American Civil War. His painting "The Germans to the Front" (1900) quickly advanced to a symbol of Imperial Germany and German militarism in general. - Faint traces of postmarks. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
