Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Il est passionnant de rechercher son être dans la nature qui nous entoure [...]". - Associated with the Paris Salon from 1870, Raffaelli mainly applied himself to landscape painting up to 1876, when he turned towards the Paris suburbs as a source of inspiration, depicting peasants, workers, and ragpickers in a realistic style. - Postmark; small ink spots, and a few faint creases near corners. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
