Scottish artist, illustrator and sculptor (1821-1901). Autograph letter signed. Edinburgh. 09.05.1882. 8vo. 4 pp. on bifolium.
To the French art historian and critic Ernest Chesneau (1833-90): "Your favour of the 5th inst. is just to hand. I should be much ashamed of my delay in replying to your previous kind and flattering communication, had not the cause of that delay been well-nigh beyond my control. So that, from day to day, the acknowledgment of your letter - and, alas! of many others - has been perforce deferred [...]".
