Violinvirtuose, 1782-1840
Paganini war zu seiner Zeit der führende und berühmteste Geigenvirtuose. Sein äußeres Erscheinungsbild und seine brillante Spieltechnik machten ihn bereits zu Lebzeiten zu einer Legende. Carl Guhr schrieb 1829 ein Traktat, das sich systematisch mit der Ästhetik von Paganinis Violinspiel und mit dessen Techniken beschäftigt. Es zeigt, dass Paganinis Eigenheiten fast gänzlich auf dem traditionellen italienischen Violinspiel insbesondere Tartinis und Locatellis fußten. Was ihn davon unterschied, sind der exzessive Gebrauch der besonders schwierigen tradierten Techniken und die damit auf der Bühne erzeugte Aura des Persönlichen und Genialen.

Beautiful letter to his close friend, the lawyer Luigi Germi, with news about a successful concert in Siena and his itinerary to Rome via Bologna, where he would meet his father Antonio and Marietta Banti, whom he intended to propose to, and the Marche. The translated letter in full: "I was in Siena as I told you in my previous [letter]. I gave the second Academy [concert], and despite the water the theater was packed. My friend - the speech of the Sienese is so sweet and insinuating, that it cannot be expressed.
Tomorrow I will leave for Bologna where I will stay for two days to give father a hug and see my beloved Marietta again. Afterwards I shall cross the Marche to find myself in Rome for the holidays. Write to me there, tell me how you are, and I will not fail to meet you and correspond with you as a true friend [...]". Two short postscripts read: "The third Academy in Florence went very well"; "You would do me a favor in giving excellent news about me to the family and greet the good Dellepiane from me". - Marietta Banti's father ultimately didn't allow his daughter to marry the famous virtuoso, very likely because of the scandal surrounding his affair with Angelica Cavanna in 1815. When Cavanna was pregnant with Paganini's child, the couple fled to the mountains, which led to his eventual short imprisonment for abduction and seduction of a minor. The child was stillborn and Paganini's vague marriage plans, which he had discussed with his friend Germi, were, of course, shattered. Rumors and exaggerated accounts of the affair would haunt Paganini for the rest of his life. "Fui a Siena come ti dissi nell'antecedente mia. Diedi la seconda Accademia, e nonostante l'acqua il teatro fu pienissimo. Amico – la parlata delle Sienesi è tanto dolce ed insinuante, che non si può esprimere. Domani partirò per Bologna ove resterò due giorni per dare un amplesso al papà e rivedere la mia adorata Marietta. Indi traverserò la Marca per trovarmi nelle feste a Roma. Scrivimi per colà, dimmi come stai, ch'io non mancherò di riscontrarti e corrisponderti da Vero amico [...]", postscript: "La terza Accademia a Firenze andò benissimo."; "Mi farai cosa grata di dare ottime nuove di me alla famiglia e salutarmi il brave Dellepiane"..

Juni 1837 bedankt sich Niccolò Paganini für die ihm übertragenen Aufträge von König Wilhelm IV. „[...] Di riscontro al pregiatissimo di lei foglio di quest'oggi sono a dirla che mi tengo sommamente Honorato degli ordini di S. M. che pal di lei messo mi vengono gentilmente trasmessi da 'Signore Andrew Barnard. Resto intesso che il concerto avrá luogo la sera di mercoledi 29 corrente, e che la ripetizione di esso verrá eseguita Giovedi 28, un quarto prima delle dodici. Colgo con piacere, compitissimo Signore, questo favorevole incontro onde reiterarla quei sensi di rispettosa gratitudine, coi quali mi pregio di potermeli professare.[...]“ - Mit einem montierten Portrait Paganinis auf der Textseite.

This is a fine album of the 1830s-40s, containing mainly complete works rather than short quotations. Rossini's song is one of many such settings that the composer made of his favourite Metastasian poem. The volume was given to Clara Stéphanie Mangin of Boulogne in 1834, in recognition of winning a music prize. We learn from the three-page piano work by George Onslow in 1846 that Clara had become Comtesse d'Espinay Theix Royat; the Château de Theix was near Clermont-Ferrand..

Schöner, unbekannter und ausführlicher Brief an seinen Triestiner "amico carissimo" Agostino Samengo (1771-1837?), einen aus Genua stammenden Reeder und Handelsmann, der auch als Musiker dilettierte und Paganini in Triest Unterkunft zu geben pflegte. Der Brief rühmt die Qualität des Graf-Cembalos, das Paganini in Samengos Auftrag von Wien nach Triest schicken ließ, und behandelt Transportmodalitäten und Kosten. Paganini verweist zweimal auf eine Rechnung, die dem Brief offenbar nicht beiliegt. Sehr interessant ist Paganinis Beurteilung der letzten vier Quartette Beethovens, die ihm barock erscheinen: "Mi compiaccio di dirvi che il cembalo di cui mi avete incaricato e che dovveste aver ricevuto essendo stato di qui spedito da qualche tempo al vostro indirizzo riuscito a paver mio e di tutti i Professori miei amici della perfezione che voi bramavate ed è tale che coll' uso si perfezionerà ancor più se è possibile siccome asseriscono i detti Professori e il fabbricatore. Mi duole di aver male inteso la parola trasporto ed averla equivocata con quella che qui vuol dire soltanto imballaggio. Cosi ché voi dovete pagare circa 16 fiorini di più del convenuto di 500 fiorini che io ho pagato (siccome rilevarete dalla qui unita ricevuta), giacché il fabbricatore non suole assumersi il trasporto che aggiunto costa circa 16 fiorini, ma ne esegui [sce] solo l'imballaggio con tutta la cura che esige il suo istrumento. L'unita ricevuta parla di 512 fiorini, ma non ne pagai che 500 giacchè in questa somma stava l'obbligo mio per voi assunto, e per essa aggiunto il cembalo bene imballato fu venduto dal Graf. Nella coda sul piano armonico troverete la mia firma in lapis, e troverete a seconda del vostro desiderio anche il leggio. Quattro dei miei dizatti [?] gli consegnerò ad un negoziante vostro amico, di cui non ne recordo il nome, che partirà fra giorni per Trieste. Ieri sera ho dato la tredicesima [...], ed ora conto di riposare trovandomi più che mai ammalaticcio. Gli ultimi quartetti di Beethoven de quali ne ho intesi due mi sembrano molto barocchi. Con quiete avrò il piacere di trattenermi un poco di più con voi. - Avete più eseguito il mio capriccio in Mi? Che fa il bravo Hyel? Salutatelo in mio nome e ricordatemi sensibile a tutti i comuni nostri amici. Le mie dovute congratulazioni all' amabile vostro Ipolito. Favoritemi vostre notizie che mi saranno oltremodo care.
