Exceptional textured-finish 8 x 10 photograph of John Lennon with his family at a park in Tokyo during their summer trip to Japan in 1977, boldly signed and inscribed in black ink, "To Mae West, with love John Lennon, 78" and "Yoko Ono (& Sean)," with Lennon adding his iconic doodles depicting himself, Yoko, and their young son Sean. The reverse is annotated by Lennon in black ink, “Japan 77,” and additionally signed in blue ballpoint by Nishi Saimaru, the Lennon family’s personal photographer and assistant from 1976 to 1979.
In fine condition, with only minor creasing along the edges. Accompanied by a detailed letter of provenance, stating in part: *"The photograph was given to me by the late Joe Gold, founder of the legendary original Gold’s Gym in Venice, California. It came from the estate of Paul Novak, also known as Charles Krauser. Paul, who was crowned Mr. Baltimore in 1947, became Mae West’s longtime partner and companion — and considered Joe his closest friend. Both Paul and Joe had been recruited by Mae’s friend George Eiferman, Mr. America and Mr. Universe, to appear as loincloth-clad bodybuilders in her famous 1950s nightclub act. According to Mae West’s closest confidante, the late Dolly Dempsey, John Lennon sent Mae this signed photograph, inscribed to her, as a thank-you for granting the Beatles permission to use her likeness on the cover of their Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. I assisted Joe with the settlement of Paul’s estate, and in appreciation, he gave me this photograph along with other memorabilia."* Unlike many celebrities who were thrilled to appear on the cover of the Beatles’ iconic eighth studio album, Mae West initially refused, bluntly asking, “What would I be doing in a lonely hearts club band?” She only agreed after all four Beatles personally wrote to her, urging her to reconsider. A heartwarming, family-centered photograph made even more remarkable by its legendary recipient — one of the 58 famous faces immortalized on the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover..

A characteristic cartoon self-portrait by John Lennon with the sun shining behind a pyramid, signed and inscribed to Hilary Gerrard: "To Hillary with love as per! John". - Hilary Gerrard (1933-2023) served as business manager to Ringo Starr from the 1970s onwards. This drawing may well have been executed during, or been inspired by, John and Yoko's 1977 trip to Egypt, where they intended to dig for buried treasures. Yoko Ono's fascination for the cultures of ancient Egypt is also reflected by her 1973 LP release "Feeling The Space" together with the "Plastic Ono Band".

From the estate of the late Franz-Peter Bach of Wolfsburg, an avid autograph collector of many years. Bach began collecting in the 1980s, following music tours in Germany as well as attending swap meets in Hanover, where he would not only exchange autographs, but also acquired addresses of celebrities, to whom he would then apply for signatures directly. His collection was meticulously collated, and the present item has been dispersed from one of his many albums.
