An den Maler, Kunstautor und Sekretär der Society of Graphic Arts Frank L. Emmanuel (1865–1948): „I last night received a letter from Austen Brown. He tells me that he has sent a letter with his resignation to the President + Council of the S. G. A. He complains of the rejection of one of his works at the first exhibition of the Society. I have spoken to him about the matter and tried to point out that the selecting committee by rejecting work, which they in a majority, do not consider up to their standard, are only doing their duty in trying to raise the quality of the show.

Austen Brown however is of a different opinion + does not think their [!] should be any selecting committee, but that every member is entitled to have his four or six works placed, and perhaps he shows some logic in his argument. However, we do not want to lose him as a member, for he is a strong and well known artist. Perhaps this matter will come up tomorrow at the Council meeting [...]“..
