Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Natura artis magistra [...]". - A pioneer of Impressionism among painters of the Düsseldorf School and a co-founder of the "Lucas-Club", Jernberg devoted himself to landscape and marine painting and was appointed professor at the Königsberg Academy of Arts in 1901. - Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
