Fry, Christopher

British writer (1907–2005). Autograph letter signed. „27 Blomfield Road W. 9“ [London]. 8vo. 2 pp.
500 € (97375)

Early Letter to Irish poet and editor Robert Greacen. Fry expresses his deep concern about an incident involving a divisive "calypso" performance during an A.W.P.A. (Association for World Peace and Amity) event. Highlighting his commitment to fostering unity, Fry critiques the handling of the situation, including what he perceived as an insufficient apology. The letter captures Fry's dedication to promoting harmony through his work and public engagements, while also shedding light on his personal values. „I must let you know how very deeply concerned I was at the “calypso” episode the other night, and wish I hadn’t been out of the room at the time: as it needed immediate interruption.

For what on earth are we doing expostulating about Collins Magazine when we allow a song of hate in our midst? Is the point of the A.W.P.A. to decrease division among men, or is it not? St. John’s apology wasn’t anything like strong enough, I thought: and was it not followed by an apology to the singers? Did we also apologize to Collins for taking them to task? I hope you will be good enough to take this letter as seriously as it is written, for if the policy of the Appeal is to be so lop-sided, then it is far worse than useless, and I for one must give up all hope in it. Why was it not known exactly what the singer was to perform?“ Robert Greacen (1920–2008) was an Irish poet, editor, and literary figure known for his work in promoting literature and his association with literary societies. He contributed to various journals and publications and was associated with the literary and intellectual circles in London and Ireland. His role in the context of this letter likely connects to his involvement in organizations or discussions regarding literature, culture, or possibly the A.W.P.A. (Association for World Peace and Amity)..
