Faisal II

König des Königreichs Irak, 1935-1958

Faisal II. wurde als Sohn des irakischen Königs Ghazi I. nach dessen Tod 1939 zum neuen König gekrönt; wegen seiner Minderjährigkeit übernahm jedoch sein Onkel die Regentschaft. Da im Land der Widerstand gegen die britische Vorherrschaft zunahm und sich auch auf das Militär ausweitete, kam es 1941 zu einem Offiziersputsch unter Raschid Ali al-Gailani, der den Regenten vertrieb, den minderjährigen König aber auf dem Thron ließ. Der Staatsstreich vom 14. Juli 1958 führte schließlich zum Sturz der haschemitischen Monarchie: Faisal wurde zusammen mit zahlreichen Mitgliedern seiner Familie hingerichtet, der Irak wurde zur Republik.

Rare, early autograph letter by the ten-year-old Faisal to Roy (i. e. F. Roy Deeley, a collector of autographs): "Thank you so very much for the snow-storms, I was delighted with them, and it is most kind of you to have taken so much trouble to find them. I hope you will have a very happy Xmas now that the war is over. Are you still working in the same factory, and how old are you now? Will you send me a snap-shot of yourself some time [...]". - A couple of very light, minor stains to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature.
