Physikerin und Chemikerin, 1867-1934
Die Physikerin und Chemikerin polnischer Herkunft untersuchte die 1896 von Henri Becquerel beobachtete Strahlung von Uranverbindungen und prägte für diese das Wort „radioaktiv“. Im Rahmen ihrer Forschungen, für die ihr 1903 ein anteiliger Nobelpreis für Physik und 1911 der Nobelpreis für Chemie zugesprochen wurde, entdeckte sie gemeinsam mit ihrem Ehemann Pierre Curie die chemischen Elemente Polonium und Radium. Marie Curie ist die einzige Frau unter den vier Personen, denen bisher mehrfach ein Nobelpreis verliehen wurde, und neben Linus Pauling die einzige Person, die Nobelpreise auf zwei unterschiedlichen Fachgebieten erhielt. Auch war sie die erste Frau, die an der Sorbonne lehrte.

Je n'ai pas eu connaissance d'une usine en produisant régulièrement. Ce corps est extrait des résidus de fabrication d'acide sulfurique (boues des chambres de plomb). Vous aurez peut-être des renseignements en vous adressant à une maison de produits chimiques, par ex à la maison Chenal Darichet à Paris, rue de la Sorbonne.
Cette maison en a produit il y a quelque temps une certaine quantité. Agréez, Monsieur, je vous prie, mes salutations sincères. […]“ Translation: „Unfortunately, I cannot give you detailed information regarding the production of Selenium. I have not heard of a factory producing regularly. This body is extracted from sulfuric acid manufacturing residues (sludge from chambers lead). You may get information by contacting a chemical house, for example at the Chenal Darichet house in Paris, rue de la Sorbonne. This house produced a certain amount of it some time ago […]“.

Folio. – „Certificat No. 581 Série I bis“ des „Institut du Radium. Laboratoire Curie“ über „Dosage de Mesothorium par le Rayonnement [Gamma]“. Das maschingeschriebene (Durchschlag) und vervielfältigte Analyseprotokoll enthält e. Angaben zu Größe, Gewicht, Empfangs- u. Abgabedaten und zur enthaltenen Radium-Menge der untersuchten Substanz, die von der Societé Nouvelle du Radium überbracht wurde. Daß Marie Curie als Leiterin des Instituts selbst das Dokument unterzeichnete, unterstreicht sicherlich die Bedeutung dieser Radium-Messung.
