King Charles III (then Prince Charles, H.R.H. The Prince of Wales), expressing gratitude to his Royal Protection Officer, Sergeant Lewis, for his work on their latest overseas trip. "Dear Sergeant Lewis, I missed seeing you last night, sadly. You were off that aeroplane in a flash and I never had a chance to thank you for keeping an eye on everything in your usual, wonderful way! I do hope you survived yet another experience in a very long line of such travels? You must have by far the biggest collection of tour photographs of anyone! A million thanks for ensuring that all the baggage & paraphernalia returned safely - and I pray a rest is possible for you.
All best wishes Charles”. King Charles is thanking Sergeant Lewis for his work on an overseas trip from the 4th of November to the 12th of November 1996, where they visited Ukraine, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan..

King Charles III (then Prince Charles, H.R.H. The Prince of Wales), expressing gratitude to his Royal Protection Officer, Sergeant Lewis, for his work on their latest overseas trip. "Dear Sergeant Lewis, Once again, you were a star on this latest expedition! I really don’t know what we would all do without all your hard won skills at the art of luggage control etc…. I have a ghastly feeling it must be very nearly 25 years that you have been enduring this kind of thing on my behalf and I am profoundly grateful to you.
I can well imagine what a nightmare task it must be & I certainly don’t take it for granted. I only hope it doesn’t take too much out of you! But perhaps you can put things back in again which mitigate the more fatiguing aspects of the job….! With every best wish, as always, from Charles.”.

An Autograph Note Signed (ANS) by King Charles (then Prince Charles, H.R.H. The Prince of Wales) addressed to Sergeant Lewis, King Charles’ Royal Protection Officer, the note reads as follows: "This letter appears to have been posted on 27th March. Do you think it could have really taken all that time to reach B.P. on 7th April? I have begun to note of late that several of the letters that come to me seem to do so quite a long time after their posting date. Could you find out if they get stuck in the post office at B.P.
or in the bomb checking room?” Initialled “C “. “Many thanks for your help in Vienna.” An interesting note by the then Prince Charles expressing his concerns to Sergeant Lewis of delays in receiving his post. King Charles has always been regarded as having an excellent work ethic, regularly working long into the evenings to attend to his correspondence. He signs off the note by thanking Sergeant Lewis for his help during the recent visit to Vienna by His Royal Highness and the Princess of Wales..

An Autograph Note Signed, a draft for a telegram by King Charles (then Prince Charles, H.R.H. The Prince of Wales), undated; however the content of the letter indicates July 1976. To Mr. Riley Smith, Wills International Polo, Smiths Lawn, Windsor, the note reads as follows: "My very best wishes from Montreal to all the organizers of the Wills International Polo Day. I am sorry not to be at Windsor, but an alternative equestrian event has tempted me away. I hope it will be a most successful day.
Charles". An enthusiastic Polo player himself, King Charles enjoyed attending the annual Wills International Polo Day event held in Windsor. The year prior, in 1975, he had attended the event with Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia. King Charles understandably did not attend the event in 1976, as he was supporting Princess Anne, who was participating in the 1976 Summer Olympics being held in Montreal. Princess Anne became the first member of the British Royal Family to compete in the Olympic games, riding the Queen’s horse, Goodwill, in the three day equestrian event. Princess Anne sustained a concussion halfway through the course, however she re-mounted and finished the event..

An Autograph Note Signed by King Charles (then Prince Charles, H.R.H. The Prince of Wales) addressed to Sally, the note reads as follows: "I wondered whether you + your family might like to try this Xmas cake from East Germany which was given to us by the East German ambassador for some reason! As we are going to Windsor for Xmas I would far rather it was eaten up in the North of England! Initialled “C “. The East German Ambassador to the UK at the time was Gerhard Lindner, who held the role from 1984 to 1989.
Interestingly, during research into the German Democratic Republic’s (GDR) security apparatus after the reunification of Germany, it was revealed that Lindner had worked as a secret informant for America’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) under the codename “Hans Reichert”..

To George (possibly George Petty-Fitzmaurice, 8th Marquess of Lansdowne, 1912-1999). “So many thanks for that wonderful day yesterday at Islamouth. It was incredibly kind of you even to think of asking me back for a second attempt at the river & I did enjoy myself! The day was marred only by the fact that my generous host failed to catch anything on the last day of the season. I could see how frustrating it was for you, even from a distance, as you were totally surrounded by huge splashes from leaping fish & the water white with foam where you were casting in mounting desperation…! The fish you sent back with me was received with acclaim & gratitude by my grandmother [Elizabeth, the Queen mother] & will be consumed at once. It was great fun seeing Charlie [Charles Petty-Fitzmaurice, 9th Marquess of Lansdowne, 1941-] for a moment and also your sister [Mary Mercer-Nairne Petty-Fitzmaurice, 1910-2003], who I think is wonderful. It was also, as always, a particular pleasure to see you – with or without the accountant! Yours ever…” The eldest child of Queen Elizabeth, Charles was, due to his mother’s long reign, the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history, until his mother’s death resulted in his ascension as monarch in September 2022. He is also remembered for his marriage and high-profile divorce from the popular Princess Diana. Charles has devoted much of his adulthood to philanthropic pursuits, founding 18 charities. Our letter was written from Prince Charles’ Scottish estate Birkhall, just outside of the Aberdeenshire village of Ballater, where he has often enjoyed fly fishing on the river Dee. Birkhall is located seven miles from the British royal family’s home Balmoral Castle. Our charming letter recounting a fishing expedition on the Tay and reports that the fish Charles brought home was appreciated by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon, 1900-2002) who, as the wife and consort of King George VI was Queen of the United Kingdom from 1936 to 1952, when her daughter was crowned Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen Mother, who spent much time in Scotland, was herself fond of fishing. Folded with show through and in fine condition.

King Charles III (then Prince Charles, H.R.H. The Prince of Wales), expressing sympathy to “Peter” for the untimely loss of a loved one "Liz" just four months after Diana passed away: “Dear Peter, I have been thinking so much of you yesterday and today, knowing how deeply you will be affected by yesterday’s tragic news about dear Liz. My heart bleeds for you as I can imagine so well the utter agony and despair you must have gone through during all these heart-rendering months that you have known about Liz’s illness. All of us who know you - and are so fond you both - have felt the agony in a far lesser way of course, but have longed to wave a magic wand to transform the situation. I often think that that is the worst part of all - being unable to help in any constructive way except to say constant prayers in the background & to try and surround you both with love & affection & concern. I can so well imagine the unbearable emptiness you must feel at this time; the sense of bewilderment & confusion that accompanies the removal of someone still so young from this world. Personally, I believe that there is another dimension beyond this physical one & that we will be amazed to discover it for ourselves when we are eventually - or at a moment - called upon to make that certain journey for ourselves. As it says in the bible - “Now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face.” I can’t tell you how pleased & happy I am to have known Liz. She was such a great life-enhancer. We shall all have such special memories of her but, above all, Peter, we mind about you & you are so very much in my thoughts and prayers at this most anguishing of times. I thought you might just find a very small speck of comfort from this short piece of profoundly wise verse by William Blake and, together with this, I enclose a few “Highgrove things” as a token of immense, affectionate sympathy from Charles”.Lengthy letters by King Charles with such touching content and insight into his beliefs and outlook are exceptionally scarce. It is likely that King Charles was particularly emotional at the time he wrote the letter, as Princess Diana had tragically passed away just a few months before in August 1997.
