David Ben-Gurion mourns the passing of Berl Katzenelson, whom he describes as his teacher, mentor, and a guiding light for the Zionist movement. He highlights Katzenelson’s immense influence on his life and the lives of his comrades, emphasizing his wisdom, vision, and unwavering moral integrity. Ben-Gurion recalls Katzenelson’s support during difficult times and underscores the deep loss felt by the Jewish people and the Zionist movement. He concludes by stressing the importance of honoring Katzenelson’s legacy and continuing his mission for the nation: „It is not easy to express in words my great sorrow at the news of my dear and beloved teacher’s passing, my teacher and mentor Berl Katzenelson. My life and the lives of my comrades in the movement have been shaped and influenced by his teachings and guidance.

I can say without hesitation that I owe him a great deal in both spirit and thought. For us, he was the greatest teacher, an exemplary leader, and an extraordinary figure in the Zionist movement and in shaping the identity of the Jewish people. He was a man of vision who saw further than all of us, and his wisdom led us all. I will never forget the powerful impact he had on my life and my path. His dedication to the people and the homeland, his vision, and his integrity were an example to us all. His moral compass was unwavering, and he remained committed to his beliefs until his last day. The loss is not only personal but national. The movement, the homeland, and the entire Jewish people have lost a man of great stature. On March 7, 1944, during the war, he stood by my side and gave me strength in one of the most difficult moments of my life. He taught me the true meaning of leadership and responsibility. His words still resonate within me today, and I find myself recalling his wisdom often. His deep knowledge and endless dedication to the cause were unmatched. He was one of the few who truly understood what was needed to build a nation and a people. Even in his last years, despite his illness, he continued to work tirelessly for the movement and for the people. His presence is missed deeply, and his absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. We must honor his legacy and continue his mission. The path he laid out for us must be followed, and we must stay true to his vision. His memory will remain an eternal light guiding us in the years to come. […]“.

In part (translated): “I have just now finished reading in the publication Jewish Spectator from January the article by Trude Weiss-Rosmarin about Maurice Samuel and his book Mr. Samuel and the Revolt of the Diaspora. It has been a long time since I have read such a Zionist, insightful and brave and honest article—both here and in the diaspora. I have not yet read Samuel’s book, but I am somewhat familiar with him through his previous books, and thus I can assume the content and character of this book. But it is not Samuel’s book that is of interest to me now, but this Trude, who is, apparently, the editor of the publication. Does anyone in your surroundings know this woman? Who she is, where is she from, what is her educational background, and how has she arrived at such a deep and brave Zionist understanding. What is this publication, J. Sp. What organization publishes it, what are its values and what is its distribution? I will be very grateful to you if you could advise me in this matter, or if you will be able to find one of the colleagues who will be able to address with knowledge the above-mentioned questions.” Punch and staple holes to the right edge (affecting a few words), and small paper loss to lower right corner, otherwise fine condition. Excellent content from the first Israeli prime minister.

An exhaustive historical and philosophical treatise tracing the identity and Sitz-im-Leben [“life setting,“ „situation in live,“ „sociological setting“] of the Jewish people in exile with many references to Biblical and Rabbinical texts upon which to base a vision for the newly founded modern state of Israel. The piece is intellectual but also emotional and has references to the Law of Return, as it will be the historical basis for this, as well as specific legislation such as the State Education Act. Signed at the conclusion by Ben-Gurion, who also adds several corrections and revisions throughout. In fine condition.
